Scar Treatment in Miami
Scars may be proof that you have lived a full life; however, these skin imperfections can also bring significant frustration, especially when they are located in visible areas like the face, arms and legs.
Why Does Skin Develop Scars?
Scars form whenever the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis) are damaged. This may occur after an accidental injury (like a cut, fall or accident) or a controlled injury (like a surgical incision or C-section).
Oddly enough, scars develop due to collagen production — the same collagen that is necessary for strong, healthy-looking skin and tissues. The difference is that when the skin is significantly damaged, the body rushes to heal that injury by creating high amounts of new tissue, but it is not always dispersed evenly. This causes the dark, raised, and uneven appearance of scars.
Additionally, some skin types are more prone to scarring. Someone with a darker skin tone is more likely to develop a worse scar than someone with very fair skin. While scars fade over time and become less noticeable, some never disappear entirely on their own.
Scar Treatment Options at Simple Aesthetics
Scars come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. In fact, no two scars are the same. Because of this, no two treatment plans should be identical. Our specialists at Simple Aesthetics will determine the best approach for minimizing the appearance of your scars.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
IPL treatments help to diminish the visibility of atrophic scars (depressed scars like icepick, boxcar or rolling scars) as well as hypertrophic scars (raised, thicker scars) and even keloid scars (stiff, raised scars).
During an IPL treatment, pulses of light energy are delivered into the skin, helping to break up and destroy excess melanin and hemoglobin — two substances that contribute to the visibility and color of scars. By helping to decrease these components, scars will fade faster and better blend into the surrounding area. While IPL treatments will not entirely rid your body of scars, they can significantly help reduce their appearance.
A series of IPL treatments is recommended with periodic follow-up sessions. The exact number of sessions you’ll need will depend on the size, depth and visibility of your scars.
Microneedling
Microneedling can be used to reduce the appearance of atrophic and hypertrophic scars. This nonsurgical treatment is not appropriate to treat keloid scars and is not ideal for patients who are prone to keloids. Microneedling causes micro-injuries to stimulate collagen production, but in those who are prone to keloids, these micro-injuries can trigger an overproduction of collagen, leading to thick, raised scars that are often bigger than the original wound.
Microneedling boosts and rejuvenates skin texture by remodeling the scar tissue. During this treatment, precise micro-wounds are made in the skin on and around the scar. This stimulates a rapid healing response, stimulating controlled and healthy collagen production. This new tissue works to replace the scar tissue, helping to reduce scar redness and thickness.
Like IPL treatments, microneedling will not eliminate all scars but it can greatly reduce their noticeability. Multiple treatment sessions with periodic maintenance treatments are recommended for optimal results.
Morpheus8 — RF Microneedling
Morpheus8 RF microneedling can be used to help reduce the visibility and improve the texture of atrophic and hypertrophic scars by enhancing natural tissue regeneration.
This precise microneedling device introduces controlled heat energy into the skin to help eliminate the scar tissue, making it easier for the new tissue to take its place. Morpheus8 scar reduction can reach scar tissue up to eight millimeters deep, making it ideal for surgical scars, C-section scars and more. Additionally, Morpheus8 can be programmed for both the face and body, making it an all-around scar treatment option.
